Little LifeSavers teaches its 20,000th child

Hear from our fabulous team of volunteers in the Midlands, Emily and Kerry, about how it felt to help the charity reach this incredible milestone.

Emily and Kerry delivered a milestone session at Burlish Park Primary School in the Midlands, where they taught CPR to our 20,000th child. They tell us a little more about their experience of volunteering for Little LifeSavers and what it felt like to be the ones to reach this magnificent milestone for us.

Emily and Kerry, please could you share a little about your backgrounds, how long you’ve been volunteering, how you heard about the charity and what made you decide to volunteer us?

Emily

I’m a paramedic for the Ambulance Service and so I have experience in dealing with people who are unwell and needing assistance. Working in a busy city, there is often a longer wait than we would like for our patients, sometimes even for the most critical. Therefore, bystander actions can be crucial. I believe that everyone should be taught how to perform CPR and how to help someone who is choking and that this should be taught in schools. Therefore, I did some research and found Little LifeSavers. I have been with the charity for almost two years now and I love the ethos and friendly feeling behind it.

Kerry

I have been involved with Little Lifesavers since 2022 after seeing a Facebook post. I wanted to get involved as I think it is so important that everyone learns the vital skill of CPR. I enjoy volunteering, especially with young people who are always fun to be around.

Fantastic, thank you so much for sharing your stories. Can describe how it felt, delivering such an important session for the charity and teaching our 20,000th child?

Emily

I felt incredibly lucky to be involved in such an important session for the charity. Not only is it an incredible achievement, but I also have a personal connection to the school. The session was taught at the primary school I attended, and where my Mom has worked for over 20 years.

Kerry

Emily and I had a lovely session with the children at Burlish Park Primary School and teaching the 20,000th child for the charity. The children and teachers were so enthusiastic.

What is your favourite aspect about being a volunteer with Little LifeSavers?

Emily

I love getting to see how the children interact and learn the skills. Every session I have been involved with, the children have been really engaged, and I truly feel they come away with confidence and a new skill set.

Kerry

Volunteering with this charity has allowed me to meet new people and have fun whilst teaching the children.

Could you describe what being a volunteer means to you?

Emily

I feel very lucky to be a volunteer and feel proud after every session. Helping people is something I am very passionate about, and being able to teach others the skills, especially as we are teaching children, means a lot to me and I am thankful to have found a friendly, supportive charity to facilitate it.

Kerry

I think everyone should volunteer when/if they can. It’s so rewarding to have a positive impact in schools and on young people.

What would you say to anyone considering signing up as a volunteer?

Emily

Go for it! You don’t need a medical background, or even to be certified in CPR yourself. The charity supports you from the very first step, you receive training from Barbara and have help from the rest of the team.

Kerry

I would recommend joining Little Lifesavers to anyone who asked. You can commit as much or as little time as you have. The organisation is well organised and very friendly. Barbara, the charity lead, and her team have done an amazing job so far and the charity can offer so much more if they have more volunteers.

Is there anything else that you’d like to add?

Both

We’d just like to say thank you to everyone who has helped the charity by donating and fundraising. Even if you are not able to volunteer, supporting the charity by making a donation or organising a fundraising event makes such a difference.

Thank you so much both for being such dedicated volunteers. On behalf of the whole team at Little LifeSavers, we are truly grateful for all your support and efforts and for taking the time to participate in this blog and give an insight in to what being a volunteer at Little LifeSavers Charity really means – keep up the great work!

Little LifeSavers teaches Basic Life Support (BLS) Skills and CPR to children from ages 9 – 13 within school in term-time. There is no fee for the training. However, if your school would like to fundraise for our charity, then this would be gratefully received.
